Menopause and the effects on the skin!

Skin is continually being effected by the aging process not only that, skin changes significantly in menopausal years.

With the drop in the hormone oestrogen, skin thickness is reduced. Such change leads to dryness, wrinkles, loss of elasticity and skin sensitivity.

In the 2nd layer of the skin (dermis) elastin and collagen are responsible for strength and integrity and this reduces up to  30% in 5 years post menopause. Elastin, which gives skin elasticity decreases 0.55% per year. Not only that, the amount of Hyaluronic acid diminishes, and this is responsible for skin hydration as it binds to water. The main areas we notice is  sagging around the cheeks, jawline, neck and fine lines and wrinkles appear.

Along with the signs of aging collagen changes and the function of the skin slows down causing:

  • Itching
  • Sensitivity
  • Rosacea
  • Redness
  • Dryness
  • Acne
  • Pigmentation

It has been proven that oestrogen replacement therapy reduces skin thickness, increases collagen and improves the skins ability to retain water.
